Thriller Opening Conventions: Introducing Characters

-Either a protagonist, antagonist or both are revealed and introduced

-These main characters tend to be male, and are shown to be stronger and more tough in comparison to the few female characters in the film. Also, the female characters involved are often victims to the antagonists or just weaker characters in general

-Sometimes two characters have different personalities, and are juxtaposed with each other. An example of this is in the film seven; Mills and Somerset are introduced- one young and naïve, the other older and more experienced. They are unlike each other but are forced to work together on a job

- A detective, or investigator of some kind being involved in the film is a good way of introducing extraordinary and probably sinister situations. This is because detectives' work is dangerous and will be different every day, meaning that if a character like this is in the film, it won't be as unrealistic or unbelievable when something eccentric or bizarre happens. Examples of this are again in Seven, Shutter Island, Silence of the Lambs, Sin City, Sherlock Holmes and The Untouchables.
